My best mom hack on getting things done around the house is to break them into mini-tasks. With kids, it’s really hard to spend an hour or two catching up on housework. But I can spend 5-10 minutes cleaning every time my baby goes down for a nap or when he’s playing by himself.
As soon as my baby lays down for a nap, I work on one quick project. I don’t have to clean for the entire nap, just 5-10 minutes each time. Doing this a few times a day keeps the housework from piling up and I always feel productive without wasting hours of my day cleaning.

So I am a first-time mom. I quit my high school teaching job to be a stay at home mom. The daily routine has been a drastic change. It took me some time to get down a productive routine to take care of the household and raise my son.
My biggest productivity hack that has worked best for me is to wake up before him. I wake up 30 minutes to an hour before my son typically wakes. This is when I do round one of cleaning (sweeping, cat litter, dishes). Then during his first nap of the day, I work on my blog. Third nap I tidy up around the house (picking up toys,etc).
Another hack is to pre-plan.
I pre-plan meals for the week on Saturday and do the shopping on Sunday. I also sit down each night before bed and make a list of things that need to get done the following day. If it’s something that absolutely needs to get done I set the reminder as an alarm to go off on my phone.
Just by doing these two things, it allows me to maximize my time to spend with my son and also work on my blog. And the routine gives me a sense of daily direction which I think as a new mom is very important.

School mornings can be chaotic at best, especially if you have more than one school-aged child to get ready. We always pre-pack school lunches 2 days ahead so each child has 2 lunchboxes ready all the time. This way we have one less job to do in the morning and if we have a busy night, we are still one ahead. We also pack ahead with any items they need the next day to simplify our school routine.

You set up blocks of time during your day and assign a task to each block. Then during that time, you don’t worry about doing anything other than that assigned task. For an example, I have a cleaning block. I don’t work, I don’t meal prep, I just clean. Then later during my work block, I don’t switch the laundry or do the dishes. That will happen later. I just work.
This system allows me to relax knowing everything I need to do has a specific time and will be done. I can focus on one thing at a time and not feel as stressed. It also fits in nicely with kids as I can make the blocks work with their schedule.
Tasks that require my full attention take place during nap time. Meal prep takes place while the kids are already in the kitchen eating. I meet the needs of my family and can better focus on my work.

Honestly, I struggled when my daughter was a baby. I was so used to getting things done on my schedule and just going, going, going. It felt impossible when all she wanted was to be held and nurse every few hours (not to mention the cluster feeding times!).

She slept longer when worn, I had my hands free, and everyone was happy. I also learned that I had to let go of my daily agenda and accept that I may not be able to “do it all”. And that was ok (you can read about how I slow my mornings as a mom here :). Now that my daughter is 2 I’m able to get more done (and still wear her at times!) but realizing I need to slow down, prioritize, and sometimes just let things go has been good for all of us. It’s amazing how much I thought I had to do that just really isn’t that important or doesn’t really need to get done right now.

I get things done at home mostly during the afternoon when my kids are asleep, I make most of this downtime working or finishing up something for my home business. Then if things aren’t done that time I continue it during the next early morning checking my phone and making sure that everything is ready for the next day by making a checklist of to do during the night and preparing the things my kids need during the night for the next day. This way I make use of the downtime I have. During the weekends, I make use of my husband’s help too.

The biggest thing that has helped our big family is the use of charts. We have approximately five or six charts around our house that help our kids get things done and understand expectations. Then my husband and I have our own sets that we use for daily activities like cleaning, work schedules, and the kids’ extracurriculars.
One of the most useful tools we have used is the if/then consequence chart.
This is a written and visual chart that we have on the wall of the living room. It lays out possible poor choices, and what the consequence is for that choice. For example, if you hurt your brother then you will have to do three nice things for him to make up for it. Throw a toy, lose the toy. Using these kinds of tools have helped us eliminate gray areas between us and our kids, while also making sure we stay consistent as well on what the consequences are. This keeps our home much calmer so my husband and I can focus on the rest of the house, and our checklists finished.

Coming up with a plan and a system for things. Cook in bulk on weekends or slow cooker meals. Certain days are laundry days. I try to batch my tasks (errands, home tasks, etc).

I utilize nap times and my son’s early bedtime to get things done. However, I have to have a list of what I want to accomplish in order of priority otherwise I waste that precious time trying to decide what to do first. A list helps me remember everything and get right to work as soon as I put my son to sleep. I utilize Wanderlist to keep track of my lists. I love this free app because I have it on my computer and cell phone, so it’s always with me. I can also share lists with my husband, so we can both add to and check off the same list.

I’m a single mum to 4 girls so we meal plan each week from the healthy mummy app, meal Prep and spend one Afternoon cooking and making snacks for the entire week. We also have our own daily chores that we mark off the chore list, even miss 4 helps put the dishes away and cleans up after herself each meal.
We all have our own ‘mess basket’ and each night we go around and pick anything that is ours up, poo it into the basket and put it away and only then do we get screen time.

My kids are teens now so it is a bit easier. As soon as the kids are out of the door I sit down to desk work and work solidly until I feel my attention waning. When it does I walk the dog and get a break with something active, then more deskwork until I get tired again, then I do something active like housework or chores. By interspersing sitting down and active jobs, I keep on top of more things

I try to plan things in advance as much as possible. Once we get my son’s school calendar, all of the key dates go into our online family calendar and my work calendar to make sure we don’t miss anything. That way if my husband or I have a work conflict we’ll know right away and arrange for assistance.
